When to Call an Emergency Electrician (And When to Wait)

Not every electrical problem requires an emergency call at midnight, but some absolutely do. Knowing the difference can save you money on unnecessary emergency fees while also keeping your family safe when it truly matters. Here's a practical guide from electricians who handle emergency calls every day.

Call Immediately: True Electrical Emergencies

These situations are dangerous and should not wait until morning or until Monday. Call an emergency electrician right away.

Sparking or Arcing Outlets

If an outlet is actively sparking, producing visible arcs of electricity, or making popping sounds, this is a fire hazard. Unplug anything connected to it, turn off the circuit at the breaker, and call immediately. Do not use the outlet again until it's been inspected and repaired.

Burning Smell from Walls or Outlets

A burning or melting plastic smell near outlets, switches, or your breaker panel indicates overheating wiring. This can lead to an electrical fire inside your walls. Turn off the affected circuit and call an electrician. If the smell is strong or you see smoke, call 911 first.

Complete Power Outage (Neighbors Have Power)

If your home loses all power but your neighbors still have theirs, the issue is inside your home. This could be a failed main breaker, a damaged service entrance, or a critical wiring failure. This needs professional diagnosis because the fault could be in a location that's dangerous to access without proper training and equipment.

Exposed Wiring

Storm damage, construction accidents, or animal intrusion can expose live electrical wires. Do not touch or attempt to cover exposed wiring. Keep everyone away from the area and call an electrician immediately.

Water Contact with Electrical Systems

Flooding, burst pipes, or roof leaks that bring water into contact with your electrical system create a serious electrocution hazard. Do not enter standing water in any area with electrical outlets, panels, or wiring. Turn off power at the main breaker if you can do so safely, and call an electrician.

Can Wait for a Scheduled Appointment

These issues should still be addressed, but they don't require an immediate emergency response.

A Single Tripped Breaker

If one breaker trips and resets successfully, it was likely a one-time overload. If the same breaker trips repeatedly, schedule a service call within a day or two.

A Dead Outlet

A single outlet that stops working is usually a tripped GFCI, a loose connection, or a failed outlet. It's not an emergency unless it's sparking, warm, or discolored. Schedule a regular service call.

Flickering Lights

Occasional light flickering when large appliances kick on is common in older homes. It indicates your panel is near capacity but it's not an immediate danger. Schedule an evaluation to discuss a panel upgrade.

A Light Fixture That Stopped Working

Usually a burned-out bulb, a failed ballast, or a loose connection. Not an emergency. Schedule when convenient.

The Gray Area

Some situations fall in between. If your breaker panel makes a humming or buzzing sound, it could indicate a failing breaker. This should be checked within 24 hours but doesn't require a 2 AM call. If an outlet or switch plate feels warm to the touch, reduce the load on that circuit and schedule a next-day appointment.
